Project Summary

This was a five-day design Sprint Challenge based on the model defined by Jake Knapp et al, in the book "Sprint, How to Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas In Just Five Days."  The overarching goal was to design a digital product, service or platform that addressed one facet of the digital divide, aimed at digital skill development inclusion or accessibility.

The overarching goal was to design a digital product, service or platform that addressed one facet of the digital divide, aimed at digital skill development inclusion or accessibility.

The main piece of secondary research we used to determine the subject matter and goal of this sprint was "Digital Talent Strategy - Road to 2020 and Beyond". It outlines various strategies meant to foster and build talent in digital fields, that would benefit Canada and its digital economy. The two categories we focused on were: leveraging Canada's diverse talent and attracting and retaining global talent.

We decided to leverage the experiences of the members of our Sprint Group. Many of us were either recent immigrants or children and friends of immigrants to Canada.

Interviews

The persona we created was based on interviews with 3 non-native English speakers. They spoke about some of the challenges they experienced when not only learning a new language but technical jargon and terms within that language.

Customer Journey

We then mapped out a customer experience of searching for the term Heuristics in English and translating it into another language. There were 4 distinct categories within the entire experience.

The Core Issue

The main issue we found was, its difficult to get a definition that fits within the context of the tech development industry.  For example:

  • The definition of "Heuristics" from the Oxford dictionary is different from its use in UX design.
  • Then when the word "Heuristics" is translated into another language and the original definition is lost again.
  • The ESL user experiences two levels of confusion and misinterpretation.

We sketched individual solutions and voted on the best parts of everyone's idea. Our solution would:

  1. Crowdsource definitions and translations of technical jargon and terms, provided by people with the same language and cultural background of the searcher along with native definitions.
  2. Save terms and definitions relevant to the user, so they are easily accessible.
  3. Quiz the user on the saved terms to reinforce their learning

DAY FIVE

The final day of the design sprint was User Testing. I first created the testing script and then walked five testers through a series of tasks with a list of open-ended questions. Some key takeaways were:

  • Overal users gained a general idea of what the icons in the navigation bar meant, but there was still an opportunity to make them more obvious.
  • Much of the text was too small for users to easily read and much too small for people with poor eyesight.
  • Users weren't sure about the relationship between the community page and how the definitions were generated.

Re-Design

I took the original prototype and incorporated some of the feedback from user testing. I also cleaned up the interface design and added clear labels to the navigation.
